Loose Parts Theory

Loose Parts Theory

Developed by architect Simon Nicholson, posits that children are more creative and engaged when they have access to a variety of "loose parts"—open-ended materials like rocks, sticks, fabric, and boxes—that they can move, combine, and manipulate freely. Nicholson argued that "in any environment, both the degree of inventiveness and creativity, and the possibility of discovery, are directly proportional to the number and kind of variables in it," meaning that flexible materials encourage exploration, imagination, and hands-on learning.
