SELF - DETERMINATION THEORY

Self Determination Theory

A theory of motivation that states that people are their most curious and motivated selves when their three psychological needs are met. Those needs are AUTONOMY, RELATEDNESS and COMPETENCE.

What is Self Determination Theory?

Wow, 10 years ago... wait, what? Has it really been a decade?! Jack and Laura created their very first drawing video This video about Self-Determination Theory, explains a groundbreaking framework in psychology. Jack and Laura visited Dr. Richard Ryan at the University of Rochester, one of the co-founders of the theory alongside Dr. Edward Deci. Inspired by his powerful insights, we created a drawing video from a clip from one of his speeches. Laura brought it to life with her whimsical doodles, and Jack masterfully edited it all together.

That video went on to be used in classrooms around the globe and has racked up over 450,000 views! It’s been incredible to see how it’s sparked conversations about autonomy, competence, and connection in learning and beyond. Fun fact: Laura is a notoriously bad speller—watch the video and see if you can spot her spelling mistake! It’s become a quirky hallmark of the project and part of its charm.
