Introducing: Quarius Lucas!

At Stomping Ground, we are constantly trying to ‘level up’ summer camp. Quarius is the type of person who is constantly leveling up the spaces around him. We met last year when he was in my cabin for staff training, where we came up with metal yoga as a way to get ourselves ready for the day. Quarius is extremely talented at harnessing energy when speaking to groups, he’s an extraordinary videographer, and makes dancing look way easier than it is. He’s the Prince Zuko to my Aang. He’s just generally the type of guy you want around.

So much so that we wanted him around all year.

What’s up everybody.

My name is Quarius

and I like bucket hats and pizza. I also really love camp and I’m excited to be here year round.

The first time I experienced summer camp was in the 5th grade. My grandma (shoutout to Mamie) signed me up for it through my school. I wasn’t familiar with it at all and was really nervous. By the end of it, I decided I had to go back some day. I worked a few years at a summer camp in Michigan and found that I was really fulfilled by this kind of work. It was a fun job. Beyond that, I got a sense of purpose that I hadn’t experienced before.

I started at Stomping Ground in 2021 as a cabin counselor and loved the creative freedom I had to make any part of the day whatever my imagination wanted it to be, whether it was making up an activity or pretending to be a news broadcaster. Last summer I got to try out night programs and try a different role at camp. One thing that remained is thatI always got to take my imagination as far as I could. I think it’s important that kids have the opportunity to express themselves and see the full extent of what they could be in this world. It’s important for me now just like it was when I was younger. Being able to be that foundation for kids today is what I’m most passionate about.

My passion outside of camp is videography. Last summer, I got the chance to blend these two worlds and capture the magic of camp with really fun videos. My aim this summer is to continue to capture that magic for the world to see.
