Halloween Costume Sale?!

Every year donors get more creative with their support for camp. Since Stomping Ground was founded, we have always emphasized there are a million ways to help camp outside of just giving money. People donate their time to stuff letters for our annual appeal. Close friends give us their old tools and machinery. But there is one individual who has set the bar for what it means to give.

And she might know the executive director…

You guessed it, Janice Kriegel everybody! Laura’s mom, secret wonder chef, and long time Target shopper has found a new way you can give back. Every year after Halloween, she makes a point to visit a handful of local Targets. She says it takes the right timing to make sure they are discounted, but if you are lucky enough, you can find costumes at 70% off! And if you know anything about our night games, you know we always can use more costumes.

Here’s the inside scoop, straight from Janice herself on how to do the best day-after halloween shopping:

The Five Criteria:

1) It should be light-weight. After all it is for summer.

Look at that haul! Perfect for summer 2020 at Saratoga Springs!

Look at that haul! Perfect for summer 2020 at Saratoga Springs!

2) Look mostly for adult sizes, mostly think for counselors. They wear them all the time for night games. But get some stuff for little kids and campers too!

3) Should be relatively durable. Like Laura says, it’s going to get put to use!

4) Not too Scary! No blood dripping, crazy swords, etc. (Editor’s note: Mom of the year?!)

5) It should be imaginative. This is the easiest criteria! Counselors and campers are the most creative and fun people on the planet.

After our interview was done, I asked Mrs. Kriegel if she could remember a costume Laura wore. An outfit that stuck out to her in all of the years at the Kriegel household. She couldn’t pick one for Laura, however, her brother Darron was another story. He wanted to be a computer one year. And so the Kriegel’s got creative, as they always do. They put a box on his head with a light bulb attached, and gave Darron a keyboard to walk around with all night.

When I get to hear stories from people like Laura’s mom, I am reminded why the work we do is so important, and that there are people who believe in the vision of Stomping Ground so sincerely. I can’t think of another place that has created more love and passion than camp.

And because of those costumes, we can create some more memories at camp this summer. Thanks Laura’s mom!
